In 1997, Uganda was represented at the International Earth Day Summit and Festival that took place in the Philippines. The team comprised of Ronald Busiinge, Harunah Walusimbi and Moses Serwadda at the invitation of Earthsavers Movement in the Philippines. Uganda won the festival and we were designated as global ambassadors for International Earth Day representing Africa. On coming back to Uganda, the idea was conceived on how we can make that historic journey a living memorial that would eventually contribute to the spirit that obtained at the summit – sustainable development, as well as building an agency in development work that would outlive our presence on earth. It is for the same reason that an NGO was formed using the same names of the organisation that had invited them (Earthsavers Movement Uganda Chapter – S. 5914/2078). It was registered with the NGO Board in 1997 and got subsequent renewals. Of late the organisation is registered as a Company Limited by Guarantee. As such the current certificate is of a not for profit Company Limited by Guarantee. Suffice to note the organisation has a fundraising arm – Earthsavers Research & Consultancy Bureau Ltd., a private organisation but one that contributes to the operations of the NGO. Earthsavers Movement Uganda Chapter is a member and the Coordinating Agency for the East Africa Living Lakes Network whose vision is “Prosperous people around clean and healthy living Lakes of East Africa.” The Mission of EAST AFRICA LIVING LAKES NETWORK is “to build a holistic and interdisciplinary approaches that are geared towards ensuring clean and healthy living lakes supporting man and aquatic ecosystems in a sustainable manner.” We have carried out many projects including the community health and environment project, orphans and vulnerable children project and the sustainable agriculture project. With particular respect to oil and gas policy formulation, we have worked together with Kitara Heritage Development Agency as Coordinator of the first ever Bunyoro Kitara Symposium (Round One) on the theme: Awakening the sleeping giant: The blessing and Curses of oil discovery in Bunyoro. The process is ongoing.
